Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) is a program designed to deter unsafe driving behaviors by passenger vehicle and commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. TACT is sponsored in Alabama by the Alabama Department of Public Safety (now under the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency) and nationally by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The program encourages drivers to “share the road,” thereby reducing the number of CMV-passenger vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

TACT combines outreach, education, and evaluation with targeted enforcement activities. CAPS works with ALEA to determine TACT hotspots and has designed and developed a TACT website for law enforcement personnel use. The website allows officers to view data and maps of the hotspots and to report their enforcement efforts. CAPS is also involved in analysis after each phase of the project. In recent years, CAPS has coordinated a TACT public awareness campaign to assist in information and education efforts.

The campaign’s main goal was to raise awareness among car and truck drivers about unsafe driving behaviors. Such behaviors may include, but are not limited to:

  • unsafe lane changes
  • tailgating
  • failing to signal lane changes
  • failing to yield the right of way
  • speeding
  • aggressive driving (a combination of two or more behaviors)

To this end, we coordinated and executed the following activities:

  • production of radio ads focusing on distracted driving, teens & driving, and truck drivers
  • placement of radio ads during traffic reports and high travel periods
  • targeted placement of digital advertisements
